Irish playwright R. B. Sheridan’s classic comedy about  mistaken identities and the pursuit of love.

Rochester Community Players: Irish Program presents Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s classic comedy about a young woman who wants to marry for love rather than social advantage, the rich young man pretending poverty to woo her, and all the other rivals for her affection. Mistaken identity, dual identities, and misunderstandings lead all the characters to the dueling ground by the end. 

Sheridan, born in Dublin in 1751, took London by storm with The Rivals, his first play, in 1775. RCP is updating the time period of the script to the Roaring 1920s. The play features one of theatre’s most enduring and beloved characters, Mrs. Malaprop, whose delight in using big words is exceeded only by her ignorance of what they mean.

The Rochester Community Players, Inc. has produced over 600 plays since 1925. In 1997, RCP established its Irish Program dedicated to the rich dramatic tradition of Ireland.
